We bought our first home

Grab your cup of *insert preferred beverage here* Lets get back on this grind.

I started writing this post over 3 weeks ago and life literally flew by and I wasn’t able to get it up for you guys – I’m so sorry. I have two more posts coming soon after this too! But now that I’m sitting on my deck taking in our undone backyard, there is nothing that should stop me from getting this post up.  No our place isn’t ready, but we’re settled enough to finally be able to call this place home ❤ and we’re more than ready to get back to a normal routine, of cooking dinner and catching up on all our favorite shows.

Buying our first home together was nothing short of an emotional roller coaster.  With boxes covering our entire apartment and then our house, it felt extremely overwhelming.   I sit here trying to gather all the sweet memories we’ve created in our apartment.  Now don’t get me wrong, I’m super excited to grow into our knew home and start a new phase in our lives, but I’m an emotional/get-attached-to-everything type of person… so you know I was crying on my last day there & happy tears on our first night in our new bed. Since I announced the big move on Instagram, I was surprised to hear how many of you had terrible home-buying experiences that you gave up or the number of those that didn’t even want to shop around because the process was so daunting. We definitely hit some obstacles along the way as well… As a first-time-home-buyer we walked into the process so spontaneously and it probably wasn’t the smartest idea – so here are a few pieces of advice for those in the process or one-day-hoping to be…

1.        Do your research.

A.        Know your housing market – are homes selling for over or under asking price? In our case it was well over! And after putting down our first offer, we were shocked.  Offering $20K over asking – we thought we were doing well but the property sold for $65K over asking.  This gave us a reality check – are we really ready to buy a house? Fast forward 6 months and we were in a bidding war – we got lucky and settled on $40K over asking.

B.       Seriously look at your finances – if you have a pre-approval for $600K – it doesn’t necessarily mean that you should necessarily go buy a house for that price.  Work backwards – figure out what your ideal monthly payment would be and then look at homes in that price range.  If you’re married look at your combined income vs. expenses look like, with room for contingencies.  Also, take a look at all your mortgage options and first time home-buyer credits.  If you had a hiccup along the way with your credit score, talk to a mortgage officer – they can guide you and break down numbers for you so you know exactly what you’re monthly payment will be with a conventional vs. FHA mortgage.

C.       Have trusted resources – are your parents’ home-owners? They were my biggest resource – my dad was able to give us a solid idea of what kinds of things we’d have to do once we bought the house. I had no clue there was a difference between home-owners insurance and a home warranty… how often do ducts need to be cleaned, but really though, what are ducts?  We relied on our trusted family to give us referrals to their landscapers, contractors, and other services.  We’re so grateful! However if you don’t have access to these resources – become friendly with your neighbors quickly they may be able to give you list of their contacts, (i.e.- landscapers that visit the neighborhood biweekly)  Home Advisor was our other handy tool for all questions left unanswered!

D.       Buying a house is EXPENSIVE. Know what kind of funds you’ll be left with at the end of the move and what kind of costs you’re looking at for either renovations, additions, or in-home décor.  We were extremely lucky and only had minor updates and some larger purchases –  PC Richard was extremely helpful and the most budget friendly! While the mortgage process was having its ups and downs – I spent my time online shopping comparing washer/dryer models so I knew exactly what I wanted lol #adulting  Don’t’ worry a separate post on a home tour will follow soon – I’m so excited to share that with you!

2.        Before you move…

Reality honestly didn’t hit us until the night before closing.  I packed a couple of seasonal boxes in the very beginning of  being in escrow and then was so overwhelmed with all my clutter that I stopped.  Flash forward a week after closing day and I’m still not packed – because I just didn’t know where to start..  Renovations are about to be over and its crunch time.  My honest desire was to leave the apartment and few personal belongings and start brand new but we had invested 4 years of our lives in making our apartment our home, how could I part with these things?  This honestly was the hardest part for me.  One of the biggest recommendations given to me was the Marie Kondo book.  De-clutter your life before you get into the place and leave the junk behind.  We made 2 piles of our stuff initially – take/discard.  Once our “take” boxes arrived at our new home, we went back to the apartment and went through the discard pile – either gave it away or threw it away.

3.        Moving/moved in.

a.        We had a months’ time to move out of our apartment, luckily that was  plenty of time to get everything out of the old place and into the
new.  We decided against hiring movers, because the new place was only a quick 10 minute ride away.  And, instead of rushing the move – it was important for me to declutter and rid of the all stuff.

b.       Don’t feel pressured to furnish your place because X,Y, and Z were settled in a few weeks. We really wanted to love our place and not get bored 6 months in.  I felt the anxiety of everyone wanting to come over and check out our new place, which came from all the right places of genuine love and excitement but to me it felt like I was displaying something incomplete… and realized later that – that’s okay.

c.        This checklist really helped me get organized and make my first few trips to the grocery store and put together some quick home-made meals. We were extremely sick of eating takeout.

I hope this helped some of you organize your thoughts and prepare for this wonderful yet HUGE decision in your life.  Have any other specific questions – let me know in the comments below.  I can’t wait to share the decor process with you guys.

Stay Blessed & Happy Lovies.

30th Birthday -OOTD

I said goodbye to an entire decade a couple of weeks ago.  And although I didn’t wake up a different person I somehow know things are going to be forever different.  This past decade brought so much pain but an equal amount of joy.  And the raw truth is that life is a never-ending balancing act of these two parallels. Not to say that this decade may not bring with it some testing times, here’s hoping that I’m slightly better at handling them.

The initial plan was to do three separate OOTD posts for my birthday since I’ve had a few different celebrations and since life has just been so hectic this month, I’m combining all three for your viewing pleasure.  I’m going to try not to ramble on this post but grab your preferred choice of drink and get comfy loves it’s going to be a long one.

Birthday Day 1: (Dinner with the Hubs)

The initially planned birthday outfit was a gorgeous red midi dress with my Louboutin pumps that were an amazing present from my fam. ❤ but it was WAY too cold and windy to even bother. The 17 year old girl inside me wanted to wear the comfiest sweats and hoodie but I’m not about that life anymore. I threw on a pair of dark wash skinny jeans with a bright red silk top I found on sale at Nordstrom Rack.  The top had fine little gold stud details on the shoulders that went perfectly with the gorgeous studs on the back of my heels.

At my wedding my amazing makeup artist was sweet enough to gift me with the perfect red she had used on my wedding day, Ruby Woo by Mac.  It’s been a staple red in my makeup collection since!

Birthday Day 2: (Brunch with my parents)

If you don’t already know this, I co-own a business with my hot mamma.  We design and sell bespoke designer Indian clothing. Owning this creative business has me on a whole new high and the need for 7 more closets in my house because I find myself designing more and more outfits for  myself but really no-where to where them to…  I decided to be my usual extra self and rock this dress inspired by Sabyasachi and Deepika Padukone with the perfect white jutti’s & silver jhumkis.  Shop @KouturebyKiran for all your designer desi needs. {Separate post on my obsession with Sabyasachi and Deepika Padukone coming soon!}

Inspired by this beauty!

Birthday Day 3: (High tea with my bff)

Alveena and I met in college and have no clue when we became inseparable. Over the years, we’ve grown up a ton but never let go of the tradition of celebrating our birthdays together.  We’ve done a fair share of high-tea afternoons at all the cute mom&pop shops but this year we knew we had to do something just as extra as us!  The plaza has always been on our list of places to eat/visit and we’re so glad we finally did it.  Way back when we initially made this plan, the thought of a cute spring dress was perfect but traveling through the city on public transportation in heels or a dress in the windy weather was not a thought neither of us was going to entertain.  #laughing at ourselves for when we were young twenty somethings and would bear foot pain/frostbite to rock a cute outfit –haha- what were we thinking but we’re old and mature now, please  let me hold your coffee as you laugh.

I picked up this white shift dress from a cute boutique in Italy back in October and finally had the opportunity to wear it and styled it with all of my all-time classy pieces. There no other way to dress for The Plaza and its sophisticated ambience. I pulled out my fresh-water Hyderabadi pearls, Go ahead, tell me something classier that pearls?  I recently picked up this gorgeous Halogen blazer I found at Nordstrom Rack.  I am such a nordie girl.  As much as I wanted to rock my new white Louboutin pumps, there was no way it was gonna happen; so I opted for my favorite pair of black Louboutin flats instead.  As well as one of my favorite bags, this white Tory Burch cross body.  I mean anything white ends up being my favorite but it always just sits so well with a casual or fancy outfit. The last accessory I grabbed on my way out was my mustard yellow Gucci scarf, also another favorite, I probably wear this statement piece at least a couple times a week.  It was a chilly day and the perfect accent color for my classy and fancy, black and white outfit.

I love rocking a great lip color, here I’m wearing, Anastasia Beverly Hills -Catnip.

I always get questions and compliments about my lip color and have realized that lipstick details should be included in all my OOTD posts going forward because they tie your whole look together.  I’ve been super obsessed with lip stains, Huda Beauty and Anastasia Beverly Hills being my absolute favorite. And I’m not a huge makeup fanatic, the basic “no-make up make-up” look is my jam but lipsticks were something I’d watch my mom wear and glam her up instantly.. they have a special place in my life because now my mamma and I lipstick shop together. #sephoravib

This year has been a stressful year with losing loved ones and a hectic life schedule that doesn’t seem to want a break but it was important to me and my loved ones to celebrate this day even if it wasn’t as extravagant as we wanted.  It’s not about what you do – it’s about who you’re with and the love you share.

For the last few years I’ve been investing in myself most of which consists of reading inspirational/self-help books and indulging in quite a bit of self-care/me time.  One of my recent favorites is, Year of Yes.   The desire for change in my lifestyle and outlook on life has come from within, with age I believe.  It’s basically the need for the life I’ve created around me to keep up with the yearn inside me.   And so every morning I wake up and I chose myself.

Hope this year is our year! | Stay blessed and happy my lovies.

Our #floweranniversary at New York Botanical Garden

IMG_1606

If you follow my instastories or know me personally, you know the hubs and I were extremely excited to visit Paris for an anniversary get away.  Unfortunately, winter storms in March in the northeast are still a thing, thanks global warming.  And so our trip is postponed… we were bummed but knew we couldn’t sit around and sulk at home.

Four years ago, we celebrated our first anniversary in New York City.  We stayed in Times Square, with views of the square at my feet… We decided to relive this. Over the last year, working in the Tribeca area has led me to some incredible discoveries, I mean can we just take a moment and think about the amazing Eatly?!?!

We ended up using priceline.com (this is not sponsored, just a recommendation from a dear friend) and got an incredible deal for a great hotel, a block away from the Freedom Tower.  It was a perfect weekend.  We started our day off at the New York Botanical Gardens – Orchid Show.  NYBG has been on my list for ages and I’m so glad we did it!  If you know me, you know I love anything floral or flower related hence the massive bouquets the hubs gets me, despite hating them for having a sad ending .  Theres something about the beauty of this creation that has a special place in my heart.  I mean flowers are basically smiles from heaven.

The exhibit far exceeded my expectations.  I honestly was just imaging a massive greenhouse with different kinds of orchids, I mean how many could there really be? But I fell in love as soon as I walked in… The grounds are huge, luckily the weather was perfect to be semi-outdoors.  The “greenhouse” was led from one extravagant exhibit to the next, orchids from all over the world, Indonesia, Africa, and Hawaii!  The exhibit ends soon but I highly reccommend it.

We’re looking forward to visiting again in the summer, once the other exhibits have bloomed.  Winter PLEASE leave us alone.  I’ll just be basking in the beauty of these flowers until spring actually arrives.  This outfit was inspired by this blogger.  I wanted to wear this color on our valima/reception, so finding this mint top made me so happy, you can find it here.

We’ve learned and grown so much over the last four years together and independently.  The biggest lesson we’ve learned this time is never forget to purchase travel/trip insurance and always find the silver lining in any situation.  We dodged a bullet we believe, there were riots that broke out in Paris the day we were supposed to arrive … And so even though this trip was for our anniversary, it definitely was not spring weather either here nor there and so now we still have something to look forward to.

There were a million things, I wanted to attempt to say to my darling husband on this anniversary but I decided to leave those for just us.  ❤

New York City never ceases to amaze me, we live 15 miles outside of it and take it for granted.  But it’s weekends like this that make us grow fonder.  We had an incredible authentic Thai dinner and a chic brunch the next morning at Vandal.  I’m always looking for new spots to check out, leave me some suggestions for our next trip to the Big Apple.

Here’s hoping your weekend was as great as mine.  #blessed
Stay tuned for a birthday week blog post coming soon.

WEEKEND VIBES

Blessings not Burdens.

Social media is such a strange place – we watch the limited content bloggers post and loathe our own lives because we’re not eating instagramable meals or sitting at the edge of an infinity pool overlooking the skylines of Greece. But what would your reaction be if they started posting everything – all their problems included? Would you still follow them? We all just want to be surrounded by positive things that inspire us #goals but in order to have that you must chose to be happy! Chose to talk about your blessings and complain less about your burdens, being a grateful person makes you a happy person because you start to appreciate the little things in life as opposed to all the little problems you may have.

Be thankful for your eyes that see, your ears that hear, your mouth that tastes, your nose that smells, your skin that lets you feel, the legs you walk on, and the voice you use to express your feelings.  Be thankful for your home, your family, your friends, your work, and your pets.  Be thankful for the sunny days, but just as thankful for all the water on rainy days.  These are just the basics, there’s so much more life has given you that you must appreciate in order to be happy.

This weekend put life back into perspective once again.  Surround yourself with the people who truly love you.  Life is too short to have a crappy/subpar weekend.  Your life should be full of love, laughter, and joy.  Hug your family and friends, do it twice if that’s what the day calls for! Cherish the good food that you’re lucky to afford.  Dress up, even if your inner self feels like a bum.  Kick up the music a couple extra notches when your favorite song is on.  Dance to your own rhythm – who really cares if someone’s watching?  Laugh till you’re in tears.  This is SO important: Not all love comes from others; it must come from within for others to reciprocate / bounce off your energy.  But the most important part of all – put on your best smile and conquer that happy life.

I spent this past weekend in Atlantic City.  I cannot remember a moment from the weekend that my cheeks didn’t hurt from laughing! Shout out to the people who feed your soul ❤

Farsali Rose Gold Elixir | Mini Sephora Haul

My skin care regimen or lack thereof is something I’ve always had difficulty talking about… When I hit puberty acne became a permanent part of my life and lasted through about the age of 21 or so….  thanks hormones. And would pop back in every now and then.  My entire life I wished I took after my mom, and got her naturally beautiful, blemish free skin but I inherited my dad’s skin imperfections… Because my mom never had an actual skin care regimen or never really wore make up, I never got into a habit of using special face washes or creams either… If I told you my holy grail products you’d think I’m joking.

Like every other teenager, I thought wearing tons of makeup was the only thing that could make you look beautiful.  It was always an uphill battle trying to wear make-up… I hated the full coverage look because it always gave me a “caked-on” face with clearly visible acne bumps and the lighter coverage would look great for a day or two but cause me to break out even more! It wasn’t until I was in my early twenties that I finally tried bare essentials.  THIS worked wonders for my skin… it was the perfect amount of coverage and NEVER caused me to break out.  Since then I’ve been an avid fan and never looked for anything else.  Leave me a comment below if you’d like me to do a full on post on my every day make up / my skincare routine / life-long battle with makeup.

As my twenties are graciously make their exit, I’m finding it more and more important to start implanting a skin care routine that works best for my skin.  It’s so easy to follow your favorite bloggers and do what they’re doing and honestly – I’ve been there, done it all but what I’ve learnt is that your skin is not going to be similar to anyone else’s. Do what works for you – not what’s currently trending in the make-up/skincare market.  With that being said – I’ve been following Farah Dukhai for years.  She is a blogger that used all natural products for skin care and hair removal and it was intriguing – {Side Note : my mom always warned me the more chemicals I used on my face/body the more I’d break out and boy was she right} Watching Farah’s journey from DIYs to Farsali hitting the top seller list on Sephora has been incredibly inspiring.  Knowing that Farah is an advocate for all things natural. I have been thinking about getting the Rose Gold Elixir since the day it launched …

I pass by a Sephora on my way to and from work.  Last week I finally decided to stop in and take a look at the elixir serum. I mean come on I’m 29 and don’t use anything to protect my skin from aging or pigmentation? After a discussion with the staff at Sephora, I couldn’t decide between the rose gold elixir and the unicorn tears… I left with two samples, enough to last me about 4 days (4 uses of each).  I went home and just couldn’t wait to test it out… I washed up and applied it all over my face and neck, went to the kitchen to grab some water before hitting the bed, I come back into my bedroom and see red patches alllllll over my FACE.  I was furious and lost all hope. How could my skin react to natural oils? I woke up the next morning and the red blotching was all gone, I actually noticed a slight radiance in my skin, I still was unsure of how I felt about the product but didn’t want to swear off of it when others were getting such good results! Why not me?! I tried it again the second night and had no reaction at all.  I used the serum for a full four days and had to go back for a full sized bottle immediately.  I’ve been using the product for a total of ten days or so and I can officially say it’s made its way to onto my holy grail.  My skin looks revived and blemish free and I am a happy camper.

IMG_1967IMG_1963IMG_1965

You may be wondering why I didn’t mention the unicorn essence – honestly because I never tried it and felt like the back of the label read to many names that I couldn’t even pronounce – and you know what mamma said about chemicals? I’m sure it’s a great product but I was looking for a deeper/invigorating/moisturizing product as opposed to a makeup primer. In no way am I a makeup/skin care guru – this just my honest opinion of the product and how well it took to my skin. Retrospectively, I should have taken some before and after pictures… If you’ve used Farsali products comment below and let me know what your experience is!

IMG_1934

How does one go to Sephora and not pick up a few other things? I picked up a new Anastasia Beverly Hills Lippie in the shade “lovely”.  It’s the perfect pink for my slighted tanned face this summer.  This rose mask was calling my name as I stood in line to pay – how could I resist?  I can do a review on it once I build the courage to experiment some more with my face.

&& let’s just take a second to shout out Farah for making it big && shout out to her husband for honestly making her dreams come true I mean can we say #relationshipgoals!

Weekend Vibes

This past week was a rough one so I was desperately looking forward to the weekend.  I really look forward to Casual Fridays at work especially once the weather is warmer! By Tuesday, I usually have an idea of what outfit I’d like to rock, to show a bit of my personality at work.  Ever since I fell in love with the poudre Valentinos I’ve found my obsession with blush pinks increasing more-so since they’ve found a home in my closet.  There’s no better casual look for Friday, than a basic white tee and a pair of jeans. I paired with a white and pink floral scarf and a pair of nude pink flats.  For the pop of color, I couldn’t resist my new Tacori necklace.  After looking at myself in my mirror over a dozen times, I built up the courage to throw on my 10 year old white Dolce & Gabbana shades.  This was just right for a quiet day at work and then a great start to a weekend away with the family.

New Beginnings

When Chronicles of a New Mrs first struck my mind, I was in the midst of getting married and then being a new wife.  It became impossible for me to keep a good balance between working and maintaining my new home life but I desired so much to document everything I was doing, and possibly giving others walking down a similar path in life some inspiration.

I started my first blog with minimal web design skills and almost no consistent schedule on my blog posts making it easier to just skip out…  For the last couple days, I’ve been feeling re-inspired and started working on a fresh new page and improving content.

The inspiration came from my last read… How to be a Bawse.  One of my favorite quotes from the entire book is “Think of your mind, body, and soul as members of a group project. You get the best grade when everyone does an equal amount of work.”

So ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the new and improved Chronicles of A New Mrs.  I will find any excuse to shop or get dressed up … but I strongly believe the way you dress and the way you carry yourself shouldn’t be for anyone else but yourself because if you feel amazing you project nothing but amazing.
